Generation of Reflections and PKP Precursors From a Scattering Layer in D″

The D″ region consists of many different structures on length-scales and here we test whether an inhomogeneous scattering could potentially explain two these seismic observables, namely PKP precursors, which are generated by near the core-mantle boundary, reflections a discontinuity in lowermost mantle. focus this study is modeling precursors lower mantle reflections. Testing heterogeneity models with range correlation lengths velocity perturbations for D″, find that some our can produce both waves. Comparing synthetic seismograms to real data adjacent locations beneath mid-Atlantic South America best fitting model length 10 km perturbation 5% gradual increase defined taper from 200 400 above boundary.
